A Taco Bus in Red Lodge

One of my favorite places to escape the hustle and bustle of New York is Red Lodge, Montana. Nestled below the towering Beartooth Mountains, we grabbed lunch at Taqueria Las Palmitas my first afternoon in town. This school bus turned taco truck could possibly have some of the best tasting Mexican around, for quite the deal– only $1.50 per taco. And it gets extra points for its unique location. Parked off the main street alongside historic log cabins, this wouldn’t be a place you’d expect to stumble upon, but well worth a visit. We filled up on tacos and quesadillas while chatting with a local guide sharing adventure stories from Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, and of course the nearby treks of Red Lodge.

Tacombi at Fonda Nolita

My friend and I recently checked out the Carsten Holler exhibit at the New Museum (which I recommend), and finished off our afternoon with tacos from the nearby Tacombi at Fonda Nolita. This city loves its food trucks, but even more when it’s a vintage Volkswagon parked inside an industrial garage, with decor to make you feel as though your someplace much more tropical than Manhattan. Still in the brunch hour, I opted for the chorizo and egg breakfast taco, and my friend went with Mexico City’s favorite– the Al Pastor, marinated pork with roasted pineapple.

When the sun is shining and the afternoon is young, Bartaco’s outdoor patio is a perfect option for lunch. Catching up with a friend, I enjoyed some tacos, a margarita and cheese quesadillas. Tucked against the river in Port Chester, NY, its part surf shack part Mexican vibe does just the trick to make you feel as though you’re on a beach holiday without a care in the world.
