Lakeside Lounging

This past weekend my girlfriends and I had a wonderful time lounging lakeside in Cazenovia. Dating back to the days of junior prom camping trips, we’ve always been known to prepare far more food than necessary, and 10 years later it’s no different. While we spent an afternoon at the wineries around the Finger Lakes, and a dinner out at Brewster Inn, we still had to ensure ourselves we would not go hungry at the house. Memorial Day essentials– watermelon, hotdogs and hamburgers were in abundance, fruit salads and bagels for the morning hours and snacks like spanakopitas, pinwheels and banana pudding to fill us up during those in between hours.

Not too long ago my parents and I spent an afternoon in Skaneateles, a favorite small town of mine, situated in the Finger Lakes region. There are plenty of great spots for dining on the lake, or stopping through the nearby vineyards, but a few miles into farmland and you land yourself at the quiet Elderberry Pond for a relaxing afternoon lunch in the country. A certified organic farm, the fresh seasonable fruits, vegetables and pasture raised meats are right aside the restaurant with a delicious menu showcasing their homegrown fare.

If only given one night out in Portland, my top suggestion would be to spend it at Fore Street Restaurant in the city’s Old Port District by the waterfront.  Although I went sans camera that Friday night, I still had to give it a shout out. Situated along a cobblestone street by the water, it’s a warehouse chic loft space that follows the farm-to-table concept with an open kitchen. Certainly worth stopping by. Saturday morning we popped into Local Sprouts Cafe for breakfast. Known for their local and organic food that comes fresh from farmers and fisherman around the state, it’s more than just a cafe, but rather a center for Portland’s creative community. Paired up with Bomb Diggity Bakery, I was able to enjoy an amazing egg and goat cheese sandwich with some english muffins for the road. Lastly, we couldn’t leave Portland without grabbing some handcrafted micro roasted coffee from Coffee by Design. In the mood for a smoothie instead? Check out Maine Squeeze!

Sipping a Barnacle Billy’s lemonade was a flashback to my childhood summer holidays to Maine. A casual port-side hotspot to get your fresh lobster rolls and sit out admiring the fishermen charm of Perkin’s Cove, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Not into seafood? The burgers are a simple but tasty alternate. To burn off the calories, Marginal Way– a scenic trail along the rocky coast– is a great post lunch activity.

After a gorgeous summer-like weekend, how can you not be in the mood for rooftop and backyard barbecues. One of my top picks for quick and easy recipes on the grill are these chicken spiedies marinated in Lupo’s Original Endicott Style Spiedie Marinade. With spring-like temperatures, daylight savings beginning and the weekend arriving, it’s the perfect day to get out the vegetables. Prepared by my roommate, she whipped up this tofu salad spread and alfalfa sprouts on spelt bread with a side of vegetarian stuffed grape leaves. Have a great weekend!

Olives Eatery

A perfect way to spend a lazy winter afternoon while on holiday is at Olives Eatery in Baldwinsville, NY with good company. The welcoming front porch of an old home is enough to draw you in, but then the aroma of the eatery and the beautiful selection of Mackenzie-Childs homegoods in the giftshop makes it that much better. We had multiple courses starting with spinach artichoke and chicken dip, followed by soups, salads and ending with delicious paninis. Unfortunately too full for dessert, we’ll have to save that for the next visit.

This time of year is always a whirlwind for me. Between holiday prep, recent traveling for work, gift buying and festive gatherings, I haven’t had any time to spare, and am just getting around to sharing some of my favorite gift ideas this season– brought to you by my amazing friend, Leslie. She recently launched Gifts Curated, a collection of carefully handpicked items from independent artists and vendors, ranging from food to body products, candles, bags and more. Last weekend she hosted a brunch and trunk show at her apartment. Not only selling her items, but giving customers a taste of her products and leaving them with inspiring ideas of recipes they could try at home. While I was home for the holidays my mom and I had lunch at Circa, a small restaurant in the heart of Cazenovia. Using produce from local farmers and regional artisans, and their very own herb garden grown in the window sills, the dishes are prepared fresh and with thought. How can you complain about a sandwich served in the shape of a heart? Alicyn Hart, the chef behind Circa, has an impressive resumé as she’s traveled and cooked her way around the world, including a sous chef at a fly fishing lodge in Alaska, in guest houses in the Austrian alps,  on private yachts around Mexico… you get the idea. She’s an inspiration for following your dreams and living life to the fullest.

It’s that time of year for my second seasonal themed dinner party. For autumn, I decided to go with a rustic outdoor picnic, inspired by my family’s leftover Thanksgiving food and style inspiration from my great grandfather’s fishing gear. For the ingredients I couldn’t find in the fridge, I spent the morning in the quaint village of Cazenovia getting fresh, local food from Troyer’s, a general store opened by the Amish (I have a whole other post on this I’ll share soon).

The Menu…

Drinks: Pellegrino Sparkling Orange Drink and Saranac Craft Beers

Appetizers: Maple Popcorn,  Roasted Edamame, Vegetable chips and Homemade Trail Mix from Troyer’s Country Store

Main Course: Roasted Turkey Sandwich with homemade toasted bread, lettuce, tomato, basil infused mayonnaise, provolone and caramelized onions

Side: Saratoga country fried potato crisps seasoned with oregano

Dessert: My mother’s chocolate Italian roll cookies and homemade banana bread

Styling Tips…

• Pack each meal individually in a small cardboard to-go box for an easy transport to your great outdoor picnic location. Cut gift wrap from Anthropologie in thin strips and adhere to the sides of the box and label the menu on a strip of tape on the top of the box

• Birch bark as name cards and propped up at each place setting with one of my grandfather’s fishing lures

• Brown paper bags folded over, tied with ribbon and a burlap bow make for great serving bowls for snacks

• Sprinkle the center of the table with leaves and pine needles

• My great grandfather’s blanket from World War I as a table cloth

• Centerpiece floral arrangement, dried hygendra with a plume from ornamental grasses
